Bridge Artist Residency KUAI SHEN Lecture, Department of Art, Art History, and Design  (Conferences / Seminars / Lectures)

"Myrmecophilia: ant mimicry as a post-biological model for resilient technology"

In association with MSU Professor F. William Ravlin, Department of Entomology. Introduction by Adam Brown, MSU Associate Professor, Electronic Art and Intermedia.

For almost a decade, Kuai Shen's art practice explores the relationship between human technology and the sociality of ants. His audiovisual installations reflect on the remediation between ants and humans as a metaphor for a non-human ecology whose future lies in the mutualism between artefacts and organisms.

In this talk Kuai Shen will discuss how certain species of insects mimic the appearance, behavior and chemical communication of ants and how these behaviors provide insight into the human techno/social condition.

"By studying ants' behavior, a common ground for interspecies-communication may be established, which could help us understand emergent phenomena in nature and the biological relevance of social networking."
